1st April - 30th April
Spring is one of the most unique and visually diverse seasons for bear photography. In April, the landscape is still winter-like but changes rapidly – snow, ice, melting ground, and variable weather conditions create rare and constantly evolving photographic opportunities.
Bears emerge from hibernation and typically arrive in the area from late March to early April. Large male bears are the first to appear, followed gradually by younger bears and females as the season progresses. In spring, bears are often thinner after winter and move calmly, making their behaviour easier to anticipate for photography.
The snow-covered landscape highlights the shape and colour of the bear, and at best, bears may approach very close to the hides – sometimes within just a few meters.
Spring conditions can vary significantly from year to year. Snow conditions depend on the winter, and in recent years climate change has increased this variation. For this reason, we recommend booking at least 2 nights to improve the chances of successful photography. Weather and natural conditions have a strong impact on animal activity and visibility.

Spring Photography Conditions
Spring progresses quickly and conditions can change even within a few days. This makes every night different.
Early April – soft snow
At the beginning of April, the snow is deep and soft. Large male bears are the first to appear, and their movement is slow, offering excellent opportunities to anticipate photographic situations.
Mid-April – crusted snow
Warmer daytime temperatures and freezing nights create a hard snow surface. Bears move more easily and activity increases, making it possible to see multiple individuals during the same night.
Ice and ponds
In April, ponds are still frozen, and bears can walk on the ice in front of the hides. This allows for unique images in snowy and icy landscapes. The distance to bears can be only a few meters.
Snowfall and changing weather
It is possible to photograph bears in snowfall and even blizzard conditions. Variable weather adds atmosphere and unique character to images.
Late April – melting spring
As spring progresses, the snow melts rapidly and the landscape changes. Movement becomes easier for bears, and smaller bears and females may also begin to appear.
Light and Photography
Spring light changes rapidly and offers a wide range of photographic possibilities:
-
long evening and morning light
-
soft and warm sunlight
-
blue hour in snowy landscapes
-
possibility to photograph through the night during full moon
Snow reflects light efficiently, allowing photography for longer periods than daylight alone.

In addition to bears, it is possible to see and photograph other wildlife:
-
wolverine
-
wolf (rare)
-
fox and other small predators
-
migratory birds arriving during April
