Bear Photography in Autumn

Autumn is one of the best and most popular times of the year for bear photography. From late August to early October, nature offers vibrant autumn colours, highly active bears, and unique northern light conditions.

As bears prepare for winter, they feed intensively, which makes them more active and keeps them in the area for longer periods. This significantly increases the chances of successful sightings—and at best, bears may come very close, even to a distance of around 10 meters.

Season and Timetable

Season: 16 August – 10 October
Duration: 1 night

Timetable

  • 3:00–4:00 pm information at Bear Centre

  • after the briefing, transfer to the hides (500–900 m walk)

  • return from the hides at 8:00 am

In autumn, bears may arrive already in the early afternoon, so an earlier departure to the hides allows full use of the available daylight.

Why is autumn a great time?

Autumn offers a unique combination not found in other seasons:

  • Autumn colours: strong yellows, reds and oranges

  • Active bears: several individuals may be seen during the same evening

  • Cubs: good opportunities to photograph mothers with cubs

  • Mist and atmosphere: excellent conditions for silhouette and moody images

  • Northern Lights: dark nights increase the chances

  • Full moon: a unique combination—bears photographed in moonlight

The dark nights and cooler temperatures of September enhance the autumn colours and create a distinctive photographic atmosphere.

Photography conditions

  • Bears are active throughout September

  • Multiple bears can be present at the same time

  • Bears often arrive earlier than in summer

  • Distances can be very short—at best around 10 meters

In addition, the area may be visited by:

  • wolverine

  • red fox

  • wolf (more rarely)

Humid air and mist in autumn also allow for striking foggy and silhouette images.

Recommended lenses

Autumn photography situations are diverse and require flexibility:

  • Wide-angle – 100 mm: landscapes, autumn colours, close bears

  • 100–400 mm: versatile range for most situations

  • 400–600 mm: distant bears and detailed shots

Fast lenses (e.g. f/2.8) are recommended for low-light conditions.

Very long focal lengths may crop out the autumn colours—including the surroundings often makes the images more powerful. The untouched and natural terrain allows for truly unique photographs.

Photography opportunities

The area offers a wide variety of environments and compositions:

  • autumn-coloured wetlands and open landscapes

  • birch forests and mixed forests

  • rocks, pond areas and forest backgrounds

Different locations provide varied angles and backgrounds, making the photographic possibilities highly diverse. More detailed information can be found in the hide map and hide descriptions.

Temperatures and conditions

Early September

  • night: 0 to +5 °C

  • day: +5 to +15 °C

Late September – early October

  • night: -5 to +5 °C

  • day: +5 to +10 °C

In late autumn, frost and the first snowfall are possible, adding a completely new dimension to the images.
