The Bear Centre is one of Europe’s leading destinations for bear watching and wildlife photography in Finland, specialising in close-range encounters with brown bears and wolverines in their natural habitat.

Located in the remote wilderness of Vartius, Kuhmo, the Bear Centre has been offering unforgettable wildlife experiences since 1999. Surrounded by untouched forests and wetlands, the area provides exceptional opportunities for both photography and observation.

Just two kilometres from the Finnish–Russian border lies the vast Kostamus nature reserve, a protected wilderness area that supports a strong and stable bear population. This unique location gives photographers and nature lovers the opportunity to experience wildlife at remarkably close distances.

Since 2016, our hide area has been a private nature conservation area where all hunting is strictly prohibited. This helps ensure a peaceful and safe environment where bears and wolverines can move naturally.

Our guests include professional photographers, filmmakers, hobby photographers, and nature lovers from around the world. Whether you want to capture unforgettable images or simply observe wildlife in its natural habitat, the Bear Centre offers a unique and authentic experience.

With over 20 purpose-built hides, we provide excellent conditions for wildlife photography and observation. Animals may approach very close to the hides, offering extraordinary opportunities to photograph bears and wolverines against a variety of natural backgrounds.

Accommodation and meals are available on site, making your stay comfortable and easy. You can also enjoy wildlife from the Bear Watching House or choose a special stay in the Luxury Bear Cabin.

At the Bear Centre, you will also find a small shop offering snacks, drinks, and essential items for your stay.

Smoke Sauna

The Bear Centre also features a traditional Finnish smoke sauna, available on request.

Please note that heating a smoke sauna takes approximately 6–9 hours, so advance booking is required.
